Kendama, a traditional Japanese toy, is being used for the aim of health promotion and care prevention. Shuichi Yoshimoto, 49, an occupational therapist in Nerima-ku, Tokyo, offers Kendama classes for the aged once a month at the community center named “Itabashi-ku Nakamachi Fureaikan” since October last year. He instructs how to play “Moshikame” for the elderly people there.

Kendama is suitable for long-time full-body motion in small spaces, and it is also unaffected by weather.  In a small experiment of kinetic momentum of Kendama, with 25 women and men in their 20s, it was found that the 10-minute playing of Kendama is equivalent to walking slowly at 3.6 kilometers per hour with regard to the before-and-after test of the heart beat and the amount of the expired air. This shows that Kendama is an effective aerobic exercise to raise cardiopulmonary functions.

In Yoshimoto’sKendama class, a woman aged 94, who does not exercise daily at all, was practicing Kendama with staying on her feet for an hour. Elderly people are familiar with Kendama, because they used to play with them in their childhood. While they are absorbed in playing Kendama, they can unconsciously work out. That’s a merit of Kendama,” said Yoshimoto.
